Windows XP had a very useful icon in the “Quick Launch” Toolbar that let you quickly show the desktop rather than being faced with the chore of closing/minimising open windows.
Windows 7 has the same feature but it located at the bottom right hand corner of your screen. To show the desktop click on the horizontal bar on your desktop as shown in the image below:
